In 2009, doctors performed the first Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis procedure, restoring vision in extreme cases of corneal surface patients. After slicing a portion of the patients canine, or "eye" tooth, and culturing the tissue in the patient's cheeck for a period of time, the small portion of tooth is implanted into the patient's eye.
Combining both his passions of dental and ophthlamic illustration, Stephen F. Gordon had the chance to illustrate this revolutionary procedure. The procedure, and art of Stephen F. Gordon, was subsequently featured on a segment of the political-satire-comedy show, the Colbert Report. The procedure also made rounds on various news programs, including (follow the links to view specific coverage): The Today Show, MSNBC, and Good Morning America, as well as the following publications: LA Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Miami Herald, SkyNews, Scientific America, and People Magazine.
